Disclaimer: I’m not Buddhist and I’m not familiar with the principles and teachings, etc. If anyone who is familiar has any input, please feel free to comment here or contact me via social.
*living creatures: Actually the line here probably refers to the saying in Buddhism, 有情 (you qing) or 有情众生 (you qing zhong sheng), which apparently just refers to living things that have sentience and feelings. This is opposed to vegetation, soil and rock, mountains and rivers, and the land itself which obviously are not living things. The original line 众生却有情 is literally: “yet all life has feelings/emotions/sentiments”.
*salvation: The phrase used was 皈依 (gui yi) which refers to converting to Buddhism, I think.
*eight pains/distresses: This is another Buddhist concept. The eight distresses of life are apparently birth, aging, sickness, death, losing with what we love, meeting with what we hate, unfulfilled goals, and the ills of the five skandhas.
*divine: The original line is “the mortal world is hard to 堪舆 (kan yu)”. Kan Yu is the art of fengshui or Chinese geomancy. Kan is also the same kan in the novel title (Tong Qian Kan Shi).
*mark my skin: The phrase was 刻痣 (ke zhi) which is literally “etch [a] mole/beauty mark”.
