Vocals: 肖战 (Xiao Zhan)

Lyrics: 易着连消醉清酒 (Yi Zhe Lian Xiao Zui Qing Jiu)

English Translation: radishtears (me)

English

Take a nap while the evening wind blows
Carrying the boat through river mist
Nightfall brings back the stars
Pluck a willow leaf as they scatter to the sky’s limit

Spread open a faded paper kite
Reminiscing of a world long gone
The river lanterns have drifted far away
And the past turns a page along with the rippling water

High up on the balcony
Drink raised over a flower-filled street
Yet we once washed our blades with blood in the Xuanwu Cave
Scorn and ridicule leave me unscathed
I have nothing left but courage so why fear others’ words
Even a sea of fire cannot extinguish compassion

Once I stole jars of wine with a smile
Crossing swords with Gusu’s most beautiful person*
There were no grand stories of life and death
Yet we always star in the tales told across the land

The magnolia trees outside the window are vivid in memory
Was it all real or just a dream?
Many seasons pass, a lifetime later
It has all become nothing more than a rumour once heard

Life lost at Nightless Sky
Who’d still believe that the youth told no lies
Even though I once traded my sword for a flute to keep that righteous promise
Persistent rumours precede me
But why should I explain myself when my loyal heart still burns hot?
A thousand people, a thousand faces, each have their own story to tell

Once, I was also mesmerized by a beautiful sight
My fingertips lightly teased swirling clouds
And qin strings trembled unexpectedly in reply
For some reason, that moment replays clearly in my dreams

Beneath the trees, numerous flower petals fall
Is this moment real or just a dream?
After our adventures, travelling in each other’s company
Rumours of our story spreads far and wide

There’s no need for words when the heart is loyal
Carefree, the flute plays beneath the falling stars
The lure of my name written into history
Cannot compare to a cup of good wine

Once, I was also tied down by the mortal world
Yearning for a love that only I knew**
There were no grand stories of life and death
So why do we always star in the tales told across the land?

The voice just outside the door is low but clear
Was our reunion real or just a dream?
Many seasons pass, a lifetime later
That previous life’s fate will fade to nothing but scars in the end

Translation Notes

*most beautiful person: The original line is 十里春 (shi li chun / lit. ten li spring). This is derived from a Tang dynasty poem by a famous poet, Du Mu 杜牧. The poem is called 赠别·其一 (zeng bie – qi yi) or roughly “send-off/farewell – the first”. It’s the first of two poems Du Mu wrote about a singing courtesan in Yangzhou. This first poem describes her beauty and that, along a ten li road in Yangzhou filled with beautiful women, no one could compare to her.

And FYI, one li (里) is approximately 500 metres, though of course it varied throughout history.

**yearning: This is another poetic reference, specifically the phrase 一枝春 (yi zhi chun / a sprig of spring). Another famous Tang dynasty poet, Wang Wei 王维, wrote a poem called Xiang Si 相思 which means “yearning” (often between lovers but not always). It is also known as 江上赠李龟年 (jiang shang zeng li guinian / upon the river, a gift for Li Guinian) or 相思子(xiang si zi / yearning seed). The latter name is because the poem describes the “red pea” (commonly known as the rosary pea) as the best object on which you can entrust feelings of yearning. I’m not 100% sure but this is probably why the rosary pea is also known as the “yearning seed/pea”.

    1. What do you mean? If you’re referring to the English being longer than the pinyin, that’s simply because it takes more English words to express each Chinese character (in terms of translation).
